Can I use Homeplugs - Mains Extenders?

Ethernet-over-mains products such as Homeplugs offer an inexpensive and convenient way of creating a virtual wired network in your home. They are plugged into mains sockets and carry network data over your existing mains wiring and are connected at each end to networked devices using Ethernet cable. In many cases these are a great way to create a strong interference-free network. However we have found cases where depending on the nature of your mains supply adding a network signal to it can have a detrimental effect on the quality of mains supply and can cause unwanted noise in audio components. While this is not guaranteed to happen and can cause unwanted noise in audio components. While this is not guaranteed to happen be aware of the possible effects including hum and distortion.  If your mains supply is prone to introducing artifacts to the audio chain this will be quite obvious to hear when no music is playing; if there is an audible hum from your speakers when Homeplugs are turned on they should not be used.If you hear no difference then you can use them with confidence

Do I need to buy a new router?

There are several types of router conforming to wireless standards 802.11a g and n.  Your Naim network player will support older 802.11b and 802.11g routers but an 802.11n router will undoubtedly give you better range and network robustness particularly if you plan to stream a lot of higher-resolution content. Our suggestion would be to try your existing router first and only consider replacing it if you find you have problems with poor connectivity or dropouts when streaming media.

How do I connect my Naim to my network?

Your Naim network player can be connected to your network via either a wired or wireless connection. For a true wired network connectionyou should connect the Ethernet socket on the rear panel to a spare Ethernet socket on your network router. You can use also use Ethernet-over-mains devices such as Homeplugs which provide a simple and convenient method of wired home network connection. However depending on the quality of your mains you may find that transmitting network data on the mains supply may compromise overall system sound quality. If this is the case you should use a wired Ethernet connection or use wireless networking as discussed below. In either of these cases you do not require any network security details to connect to the network. If you want to connect wirelessly to the home network the supplied Wi-Fi antenna must be fitted to the rear panel wireless antenna socket.  You should then configure your Naim network player to connect to the wireless network as follows: Select ‘Network Settings’ in the Setup menu using your remote handset Select ‘Wireless’ Scroll down to the network you wish to join (which if more than one network is available must be the same network as your NAS or computer running a UPnP server) and select ‘OK’ on your remote. Enter the network password using the number keys as you would a text message. Select ‘OK’. The networking will restart and should confirm that the network has been joined with the message ‘Connected – Press OK to finish’.     "

Can I use wireless extenders?

Naim Audio always recommends that our products are connected via wired Ethernet connections wherever possible but we do also understand that users like to have the convenience of using a wireless connection sometimes and have provided wireless networking capabilities on our streaming clients. It should be understood that there is no way to guarantee coverage and performance of wireless networking within an environment and if a user is unable to obtain wireless network coverage in an area then they may be tempted to install a wireless network extender in their property to provide additional coverage. In this case it should be noted that using a wireless extender will degrade the overall throughput of the customers wireless network as the extender has to receive buffer and then retransmit any and all data that is being sent on the wireless network; no matter where that data is destined. Customers may also be tempted to use devices which allow Ethernet data to sent via their home mains power wiring these are known as Ethernet over power devices. (They may also be generically referred to as or Homeplugs) While these units provide a an alternative solution to running a physical network cable they do also inject their signal onto the mains wiring and can degrade the sound quality of any hifi components connected to the mains. Also their performance can be negatively impacted by any other devices (such as switch-mode power supplies as found with most current electronic kit or whitegoods with electrically noisy motors) and so again we cannot guarantee that these devices will provide a stable enough connection.

Do mains cables affect performance?

Certainly. A system is only as strong as its weakest link, and at Naim we believe that system upgrades should always be carried out from the source end first. With these two tenets in mind, it makes perfect sense to take the quality of the mains supply to your system into account as much as power supplies, interconnects and speaker cables. While high quality mains cabling is more or less a given with our higher-tier systems, benefits can certainly be heard with our integrated systems. If you're an owner of a Uniti Range product and are seeking an uplift in sound quality, but aren't keen to increase your box count, then the Naim Power-Line is the perfect addition. The Naim Power-Line consists of a mains outlet plug, a mains cable and a mains IEC inlet plug. All the components are custom designed: the Power-Line is manufactured with 4mm2 cross section, copper conductors, individual dielectric insulation chosen for its sound-enhancing electrical properties and a rubber outer that provides high levels of inherent mechanical damping and the correct stiffness to aid cable dressing. It’s compatible with all mains-powered Naim products.

Why Do I Need A Power Supply?

The Naim ethos has always centred around uncompromising sound quality. It's entirely possible to build a high quality power supply into a product, in order to create a more cost and space-efficient piece of equipment, but this is always a compromise. Removing the power supply from a device and having a dedicated, separate PSU enables more care to be taken with circuit board layouts - minimising interference and crosstalk between signal and power lines - and keeps the electromagnetic field generated by the large toroidal transformer away from the sensitive audio circuitry. This also enables us to devote more space and similar care and attention to mapping out a more efficient, higher quality and lower noise power supply in a chassis of its own. The result is a drastically lowered noise floor, improved dynamics, musicality and cohesiveness within the music. Truly, though, the improvements offered by an external power supply cannot be accurately described, only realised through a demonstration by your Naim Dealership. Here we have our flagship streamer, the ND 555, next to its dedicated power supply, the NAPS 555 DR. In cases like this, the streamer has been designed entirely without an internal power supply, allowing both units to deliver the best performance possible in their own right, and as a sum of their parts. Other products in our ranges also allow for the use of their internal power supply, or the addition of an external PS upgrade - a prime example of this is the New Classic 300 Series' NAC 332 preamplifier and NPX 300 power supply. For more information on potential power supply upgrades for your system, please contact your Naim Dealer or Naim Technical Support.
  • Product upgrades

Why do you include power supplies on products that can be upgraded?

Every product needs a power supply to operate and the standard power supply fitted to Naim products is intended to deliver a high level of performance at reasonable cost. Integrated Naim amplifiers provide an adequate power supply for the partnering preamplifier. But we like to offer our customers the chance to upgrade and improve the performance of their Naim system even further if they so wish. An external power supply can be added at a later date
  • Product upgrades

Why can’t you upgrade the power supply on the NaimUniti, NaimUniti 2, SuperUniti, UnitiQute & UnitiServe

Naims Uniti all-in-one players are designed to offer an all-in-one solution so the power supply is included as an integral part of the design.
