How do I switch my server on?

Your Naim Music Server can be powered up by switching the back panel power switch to the (1) / On position dash; this applies power to the unit and it will then automatically start up.
  • Servers

How do I switch off my server?

Under normal circumstances your Naim Music Server should not be simply turned off via the rear panel switch Instead to power down your Naim Music Server you should press and hold the standby button on the front of the unit (HDX and NS0x) or touch and hold the Naim logo (UnitiServe) until the LED illumination of the button or logo begins to flash; the unit will then shut itself down a process that can take several minutes. When the unit has shut down then the front panel logo will be extinguished and the rear panel power switch can be turned off.

What are the different kinds of UPnP?

There are 3 types of UPnP devices: Servers control point and renderers UPnP servers incorporate software that enables products like the NaimUniti / SuperUniti / UnitiQute or any other UPnP compatible player to access and play their audio over your network. A UPnP server might be a Naim HDX UnitiServe hard disk player or a PC or Mac home computer. Some network attached storage devices (NAS) also incorporate a UPnP server. A variety of third-party UPnP server applications are available that are compatible with both Windows and Mac OSX such as Twonky MediaServer. Other options include the likes of Logitech Transporter Asset Playback EyeConnect Allegro VortexBox. These can be downloaded from the internet. Note that Windows Media Player version 11 and above incorporates built-in UPnP support so you won't need a third-party server app. A UPnP renderer is a device that plays back media content provided by a media server. Think of it as a client. A UPnP renderer can (but doesnt have to) include a control point. Most UPnP-capable devices will include a renderer and control point. The control point will control playback of UPnP media renderers. So products like the NaimUniti NaimUniti 2 UnitiQute and SuperUniti can play back and control audio stored on a UPnP server such as the Naim HDX or UnitiServe.

What is a music server?

A music server allows you to store all your music on a hard drive and allows it to be accessed by any number of Naim network players around the home subject to the strength of your home network.  A music server runs music library software which lets you catalogue your music and create and share playlists. You can set up a dedicated NAS (Network Attached Storage) server for your music but you dont need to buy special hardware. If you turn on Media Sharing in Windows Media Player your PC will immediately become a music server that can be recognized by your Naim network player and there are third-party music software packages - such as Twonky and Elgato Eyeconnect - which will turn your Mac or PC into a music server with little effort. For best results however we would of course recommend the Naim UnitiServe and HDX which are both high-quality music servers providing bit-perfect rips of your CDs.

What is UPnP?

UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play. It is a group of open format protocols designed to make network connectivity easier. It allows different devices on your network to connect to each other. In the case of Naim UPnP products this means they can connect to any other UPnP compatible device such as a Mac PC or Network Attached Storage (NAS) device to stream and play audio stored elsewhere on your network. UPnP technology works on any network technology including wi-fi Ethernet over mains and direct Ethernet. The audio files stored on the UPnP servers attached to your network can be in MP3 MP4A AAC LPCM 16-/24-bit FLAC WMA WAV AIF or Ogg Vorbis formats. Files must not include any digital rights management (DRM) playback restrictions.

What media server should I use?

You should use a media server that best suits your media library and the computer or NAS you are running it on. We have tried many paid and free media servers and have had excellent results with servers such as Asset EyeConnect Jamcast J. River Tversity Twonky Windows Media Player and XBMC. Features that you should consider are for example: ability to transcode to PCM on the fly if you have some music in an unsupported format virtual soundcard functionality to play whatever audio is playing on your PC speed we have found that some servers are quicker than others at serving up your library playlists artist lists etc Most servers offer trial versions so that you can try them in your own system to see which fits your needs best.

What's the difference between UPnP and DNLA?

DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is effectively a subset of UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) which includes some restrictions to the UPnP standard around formats supported. Beyond this they can generally be considered synonymous in practical terms and because your Naim network player supports UPnP it will connect to virtually any DLNA server

Which UPnP control points do you support?

We support the use of our products with our own n-Stream control application. Other UPnP control points may operate subsets of the products functionality but Naim Audio cannot guarantee their completeness and compatibility.
  • Servers

Which UPnP servers do you recommend?

We would primarily recommend our own UnitiServe product. However we have tested our Uniti and ND series products with as many popular UPnP servers as we can. We would generally suggest either AssetUPnP (on Windows) or EyeConnect (on Mac OSX). However as we do not control the development of these products we cannot guarantee their functionality and customers should check they are appropriate for their requirements.
