NDX 2 isn't playing music files on my USB drive

The NDX 2 can handle NTFS, HFS and FAT32 formatted drives to allow playback of music files. You may need to re-format your USB drive. Make sure to back-up all data on the USB drive before re-formatting. For more information on supported file types, see the “Specifications” topic.

Should I buy a Naim server?

If you have a large CD collection then its well worth investing in a server as you can (copy) them all to the hard drive and store them conveniently in one place for playback through your system. That way you don't have to hunt around for a particular CD when you want to play it ; your entire collection is available at the press of a key on the remote a click of a computer mouse or the touch of an iPhone/iPad. Convenience is the key: a Naim server will automatically catalogue your CDs by artist album and track enabling easy search and selection of your favourite music. The 2TB hard drive on the Naim UnitiServe and HDX is sufficient to store around 3. 600 bit-perfect uncompressed CD albums. (Assuming a typical CD size of 600MB.) A server will also allow you to store and play back high-resolution music files in better-than-CD high-definition quality up to. And it can scan your network to play back music stored on NAS (Network Attached Storage) drives or network shares in WAV. AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, OGG Vorbis, AAC, WMA and MP3 formats you can partner the Naim UnitiServe with the UnitiQute or Uniti2 to create a multi-room system or use it with a Naim SuperUniti as part of an integrated system. Alternatively you can connect the optical or coaxial digital output of the UnitiServe to the digital input of a suitably equipped amplifier or hi-fi system for playback of CDs or music ripped to the hard drive. And the analogue or digital outputs on the Naim HDX can be used to connect it directly to an amplifier or hi-fi system. If you don't want to make a direct connection then the UnitiServe and HDX are UPnP devices so will act as a UPnP server to stream audio to any compatible UPnP playback device you have in your network.

How do I back up my Naim server?

The Naim UnitiServe does not incorporate an integral backup disk driveso we strongly recommend you protect your stored music by implementing a regular backup to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. Implementing regular backups to a network share can be set up via the UnitiServe system menu. On the external display desktop client or web browser Select System from the Home menu and then go to Music Stores. Music Stores are the locations where ripped CD data is stored and can include both the UnitiServe internal hard disk and nominated network share locations. Selecting Music Stores opens the menu to provide options to Manage Stores Add New Store View Backup and Add Backup. Select Add Backup this enables an empty network share to be nominated as a backup location. The Naim HDX does not incorporate an integral backup disk drive so we strongly recommend that you protect your stored music by implementing a regular backup to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. HDX backup must only be performed over the network; we recommend that weekly automated time-stamped differential backups are carried out. To help facilitate backups HDX music is made available as a read-only drive on the network. The majority of commercially available NAS drives incorporate setup menus accessed via a web browser that enable regular automated backup of a specified target drive to be configured. The automated backup setup procedure for the majority of NAS drives will be similar to the one described in the following steps. Ensure that the NAS drive and HDX are on the same network and switched on. Read the NAS drive user instructions and make sure you understand its operation. From a computer connected to the network open a web browser application and browse to the NAS backup drive setup menus. The network name or the NAS drive will be provided in its user documentation or on a label affixed to its case. From the NAS drive setup menus create a new shared folder on the NAS drive called HDX Backup. Again from the NAS drive setup menus create a new backup job. Select a remote time-stamp backup and type the HDX network or for example) in the text field. In the field type “Music If login and password fields are provided leave them blank. If a connection test facility is provided within the setup menus use it and wait for a positive result. From the NAS drive setup menus select the desired backup format and schedule. We recommend selecting a weekly time-stamped differential backup. The initial backup may take a considerable time to complete. The backup process may reduce HDX response speed while it is underway. It is best to schedule backups to run at times when the HDX is unlikely to be in use. A differential backup only records changes that have occurred since the last backup. If a separate NAS drive is used for rip storage in addition to the HDX internal storage this must itself be backed-up. The same NAS drive should not be used for both primary rip storage and backup. As well as using a NAS drive for backup it is also possible to use an automatic backup application running on a network-connected computer. However this option requires sufficient hard disk s pace always to be available on the computer and that the computer is left running permanently to ensure that scheduled backups are not missed. nHDX must be switched on for automated backups to take
